Koopa

Meet Koopa!!

Yep, our family has increased again!  Koopa, as in Koopa Troopa from Super Mario (I know, we are pretty cool!) is our newest arrival!

You might think we are insane for getting a puppy as well as having a 2 month old baby and a 2 year old!  You might be right, but after we were burgled again we decided it was time to get a dog!  We’ve been thinking about it for a long time and this was the final straw.

So the burglary happened Monday night and by Tuesday evening we had this little guy.

I feel like it was a ‘meant to be’ sort of situation.   Let me explain:
We told our next door neighbour what happened.  She already had 2 dogs and said we really should get one.
Randomly, later that morning her husband was given a puppy by someone he worked with (That kinda thing does just happen here as I’ll explain later).  When I saw it I asked her to let me know if she heard of any more.  Turned out there were more puppies and they brought him right on round to us.

Okay, so this might not sound like a regular way to get a dog.  I guess it isn’t.  But, here that’s totally normal.
Dogs aren’t really kept here in the way that they are in the UK.
Nearly all dogs are outside dogs.  They tend to be sort of free range too due to most people not having fences around their properties.  You see a lot of little dog packs around.  They are never intimidating though.
Lots of ‘free range’ dogs results in a lot of unwanted puppies, unfortunately not a lot of people get their dogs spayed.  Therefore it really isn’t that unusual to be offered a puppy, or a kitten for that matter!

When we got him he was 6 weeks old, he’s now 8 weeks.  I have taken him to the vet and he has been given his first vaccination and is on a months course of worming tablets.  We’ve got some flee stuff coming out from the UK this week for him too, just in case!  I couldn’t believe how cheap it was at the vets, I payed 300scr (£15)!

We are really happy to be taking in little Koopa and giving him a home where he is really wanted, looked after and truly a part of the family!

Koop is a “creole breed” essentially what that means is he’s a mutt! But he’s a super cute one!!!
He is a really lovely natured little guy and Arthur adores him.  They spend lots of time playing together outside in the garden.

We have to remember that as well as our family pet he is here to help with security. He sleeps outside on our veranda for three reasons

  1. So that he will be aware of anyone breaking in
Right now he clearly is not much of a force to be reckoned with.  But, the main thing is that he will hopefully bark and generally draw attention if someone tries to break in.
  2. Because we are not totally insane and know that we need to keep Koopa separate from Freddie for now!
  3. Because Mark is actually allergic to dogs so we don’t want dog hair in the house!  Although, so far so good Mark has had no reactions to Koopa!  He has never had a dog or a cat before which is why I think he reacts to them, so I think that he will build up a tolerance!

So there you go!  The fifth member of our little island family!
