Since Koopa got introduced to the beach on his first walk we’ve been loving taking him there! It’s becoming a real special time for us all.
We jumped in the car one day last week and drove down the road to a beach near to where we used to live.
It was the end of the day, it was cooling down outside and the beach was lovely. Mark had Freddie in the wrap and off we went!
Arthur and Koopa are so cute, they were off in their own little world exploring together.
How cute is this picture of Arthur’s footprints and Koopa’s paw prints in the sand!
Along the way Arthur stopped to throw some stones into the Ocean, definitely one of his favourite things to do!
We walked until we found some trees that had fallen down.
We had so much fun playing around, climbing running and hiding in them.
Arthur thought it was great and Koopa did too! It was lots of fun watching the two of them chasing each other around, enjoying each other’s company.
We were having such a lovely time that we hadn’t realised it was way past Arthur’s dinner time and we had to head home.
Of course when a small boy is having so much fun, just going home is not always as easy as all that!!
Our little master of distractions found anything to take as long as possible to get home!! He threw stones and seaweed into the sea, splashed around and generally just slowed right down to do anything but go home.
The thing is, he looks so cute while he’s doing it, it’s pretty hard to get angry!
In the end the only thing for it was a mama piggy back!!
It became one of those magic moments. Those unplanned, simple yet oh so beautiful moments. The ones where we sit back and think yep, that’s why we live here!! This is definitely a special place for us now and a lovely place to go for a family walk.
Arthur has been poorly this week.
Thursday I had a midwife appointment and while we were there I noticed he was quite warm. He hadn’t eaten very much at breakfast time so I gave him a yogurt when we got home.
A little after that I gave him some calpol as his temperature was getting higher.
Then my poor little guy was sick, twice.
Arthur is never poorly and has never been sick like that, it was really sad. He handled it so well though bless him. I cleaned him up and then we snuggled up on the sofa.
He probably did not get much chance to get any benefit from the calpol before he was sick and his temperature did not really go down.
All he wanted was to be snuggled with me.
I’ll be honest, all I wanted was to be snuggled with him too, for him to be better.
We ended up having two days of mostly being on the sofa watching movies or in Arthur’s room reading stories.
Bed times were what I struggled with the most. Our little bed time routine for Arthur is always such a lovely time for the three of us and things were just not right.
The first night he ate a little dinner and drank his milk. Bed time routine was mostly the same.
When Mark and I went upstairs to bed we heard Arthur laughing so we went into his room he was totally delirious. We gave him more calpol and cuddles and he was soon back off to sleep.
It was so hard to see him like that, just not with it at all.
The second night was perhaps worse. He’d not had any calpol in the afternoon as his temp was down after nap time. However by late afternoon it had crept back up. We decided to wait till bed time to give him medicine so he could have a good nights sleep. He didn’t touch his dinner and drank hardly any of his milk. He then basically passed out on his bed after having his medicine. His temperature was high all night and his sleep was a lot more broken.
Luckily by Saturday afternoon Arthur seemed to be a lot more himself. He ate most of his dinner, which probably ended up being more than he’d eaten since Thursday!!
Bed time was a lot more “normal”. We had stories and cuddles.
Arthur didn’t wake up until 8am Sunday morning which is I think the most he’s ever slept!!!!
It obviously did him the world of good as he’s got loads more energy today! We even did a little beach trip this morning, had a splash around, looked at fish and built sandcastles! He got tired faster than usual but we still had fun!
I’m so happy that Arthur is on the mend. It’s been awful for Mark and I to see him so poorly.
We did get lots of lovely cuddles though and though he was very clingy, he was never upset or grumpy with it. We were so surprised with how well he dealt with it all!
It did also serve as a good reminder that he really isn’t poorly very often though and so it’s definitely something to be thankful for!
We have been in our new house for over a month now and we really do feel settled, it’s amazing how quickly it has become ‘home’ I think that this is definitely in part to how quickly Arthur has settled in!
There are many things I love about our new house, but what I love most of all is our new garden!
In our old house we had no garden as such, in that the whole area was open, nothing fenced off. There were only about 6 houses along the path but it meant that cars would come up and down. This meant I could never fully relax with Arthur being out there once he could walk. We really enjoyed being outside don’t get me wrong but as Arthur has got older it became a lot less practical!
In our new house, our garden is our own! We are fenced in and so it’s really safe for Arthur! We are all loving this space that he can run around and explore independently!
We have this lovely big tree which gives shade in the garden all day! This is of course a huge bonus for us as without this there are definitely times of day where it’s just too hot to be outside! This tree means he can always be out there any time of day!
There’s a lovely swing on there, and for when he’s a bit bigger a tree house.
The tree house. Both of Arthur’s Grandads are VERY excited about this! What is there right now is very basic and not really that safe! I think they both have grand ideas about what they want to make it into!!!!
The branches of the tree mean that it really is perfect for a tree house, they all go out at 90 degrees and then up 90 degrees again. They’ve almost made a room themselves!!
We also have a couple of old tree stumps dotted around the garden that Arthur loves climbing up on to!
Growing in our garden we have a local tree called a Jamalack. The fruit are kind of a mix between an apple and pear.
We’ve just planted chillis and our gardener has very kindly given us a lemon tree with fruit already on (here lemons are more like limes but smaller again and perfectly round they are good!) and also a little tiny grapefruit tree although that one is a long way of fruiting unfortunately!!
He has also promised us some banana plants yum yum!!
We are all really loving our new garden, it’s amazing how something so ordinary can make such a huge difference!! We are spending more and more time outside! The paddling pool is getting more use then ever! We even eat all our meals outside now as we have our dining table out on the veranda!
Arthur has always loved when we count, particularly going up and down stairs!
What’s really exciting is that now he has started counting too! It started off with him saying “two” every time he went up and down any step…..I’m not so sure why he started with two but it made us laugh!
Another place it started was whenever Mark wore his ‘tour de France’ Tshirt as it has pictures of of the 4 different jerseys on there: yellow, white, spotty and green (Mark will be impressed that I remembered that!) he would point at them and say “two” and then get Mark to count along with him! He loved it!!
The only pictures I have of this is really grainy but I’ll share them since it is so cute!
Now we have stairs at our house there has been a lot more counting going on! I’m now unable to go up or down stairs without counting, even if I’m not with Arthur (hello crazy mama!)
In the last week or so Arthur has started saying “one” although it’s a little more of a “waaaa” occasionally with a ‘n’ on the end! Then following it with a very lovely clear “two” and then sometimes we even get a “weeeee” (three!)
Arthur thinks counting is a lot of fun, which we love! He’s learning that there is lots more things to count then just stairs too!!
So I think we will have lots of “Waaaa, twooo, weeee” to come
So as you know we moved house last weekend!
We decided it was a good time to move Arthur to his ‘big boy bed’
Since we will need the cot again in August, we wanted to make sure that we moved Arthur well before that to give him as much time as possible getting used to his new bed before his baby brother or sister arrived. We didn’t want him to feel like he was being kicked out of his cot!
So anyway, last Saturday night was Arthur’s first night in his new bed.
We don’t have any special guards for the side of his bed so we put a mattress on the side and one at the bottom of the bed in case he fell out.
It was weird. It felt like it should have been a huge moment in our lives, and I guess to look back on it, it is a big milestone.
At the time though, it didn’t really feel so huge. We did Arthur’s bed time routine exactly the same as we have done since he was teeny tiny. He got into his new big boy bed and we did his bed time stories, the same as we always do. He snuggled up with Bunny and Blanket the same way he always does.
It was the same.
Except of course it wasn’t.
Our teeny tiny baby boy, was in his big boy bed.
We went in to check on him a few more times than usual. Since we have an upstairs now we weren’t sure if we would hear him if he had woken up.
When we went to bed we opened his bedroom door as we always have done, he was fast asleep.
He slept all the way through without any problems, he didn’t fall out, he didn’t cry.
I heard him get up at around 6am, he played with his toys for a little while and then he came to find us and start his day!! He was happy to be in his new house and happy to see his Mummy and Daddy.
We didn’t take any pictures that first night. I didn’t write about it on twitter. I don’t know why. Perhaps we didn’t want to ‘jinx’ anything. In case this first night was a fluke and it all went downhill after that.
Nap times haven’t even been that different. The first couple of days when I took him to his bed he stayed up and played for a while before falling asleep but aside from that he’s still getting his two hours. I’m still ensuring I get my sleepy cuddles with him before he wakes up properly. Except now I can get into his bed with him to snuggle.
I took a little snap of him during nap time the other day, it’s not a particularly great picture but it does show how tiny he looks in his new bed. That perhaps he’s not such a big boy yet after all!
It’s been a week now. Arthur has taken the move to his big boy bed completely in his stride.
We’ve been in his room a few times and found him on one of the mattresses on the floor but still asleep so we’ve just scooped him back up and put him into his bed. One night he must have rolled off the mattress on the floor and woke up, I put him straight back to his bed and after a little cuddle he went back off to sleep no problem at all.
We are so very proud of our special little guy for doing so well. He has always surprised us with how adaptable to change he is. I know that a lot of this is down to the fact we’ve had such a good routine with him for so long (which sounds kind of contradictory I know!!).
We have been so lucky that he’s made it so easy for us. But there is a part of me that’s sad. The part that’s not ready for our baby to become the ‘big’ boy he’s so rapidly becoming, the part that can’t quite believe that this little boy is going to be a big brother, and definitely doesn’t think he’s big enough for his big boy bed.
The part that still sees this teeny tiny boy
On Tuesday Mark left to go to London to do some interviews for new teachers at the school.
This ment that Arthur and I would be by ourselves for 5 nights!
Now this might now seem like a big deal for many, after all a partner working away is not all that uncommon! However, for us, this was the first time!
Since Arthur has been born I think Mark has been away for 1 night. That’s it! So 5 nights for us has been a pretty big deal!
I’ve been very anxious about it on the lead up to it!
It’s now Sunday morning, Mark is home in a few hours and if I do say so myself, we have done pretty good!!
Arthur and I have been swimming every day, both at the pool and at the beach! He is such a water baby, he goes absolutely crazy, I love it! I need to start taking the camera when we go swimming again and capture some of those moments! It’s been nice just to enjoy them first hand though and not worry about any of that stuff!!!
I have to say though, it’s been exhausting and I’ve really missed my team mate!! Thursday in particular was really rough, Arthur was in an awful awful mood ALL day.
He threw tantrums left right and centre!
Looking back now though they are already kinda funny….
We went to the shop and they had strawberries (a special treat here) so I bought them for Arthur as he loves them.
We get home and I cut some up for him. He went to the fridge to say he wanted a snack and when I gave him the strawberries he FREAKED out (because they hadn’t come from the fridge what a diva!!) I then made the mistake of trying to give him a drink…..
My lovely next door neighbours came to the back door to check all was ok and to give me a break. Arthur saw them and their cat Smudge and was instantly all smiles and laughing. So yeah, that felt good 🙁
Throughout the week we took silly selfies for Daddy, something we should do more!
We’ve also had lots of snuggles, he’s been extra snuggley and loves to give cuddles to baby bump too!!
My friends have been amazing in making sure I’ve not felt isolated or too lonely I can’t thank them enough for that!
So it’s almost time for Mark to be home! Arthur and I are very excited! We’ve had a fun week just the two of us but I’m excited to get back to our family of three (plus bump of course!)
Bunny and Blanket have been with Arthur since he first left the hospital.
In the little travel cot he had to call home while we stayed in Mahe
Then once we got back home to our little house, and his big cot, in Praslin.
There’s not been a night where Arthur has been without them
We only have one Bunny, which frankly terrifies me! It was a gift and we don’t know where it was from!!
There are actually two Blankets, and when I say blanket I mean Aiden and Anais large muslins. One is blue and one is white with spotty patterns on. I don’t know how we have got away with it but it seems to be no problem for us to change between the two of these! Blanket is never really used as an actual blanket any more. Arthur actually doesn’t like it if I try and put it over him, it’s just for cuddling!!
These days Bunny is definitely more of a grey colour and is looking a little rough around the edges. I kind of like that, It shows how loved he is.
Over the last couple of months I’ve noticed that we are seeing more of Bunny and Blanket.
They have always been confined to snuggles in bed. However, Arthur is now a pro and getting in and out if the cot wih the side down and as a result Bunny and Blanket have been out and about more too!!
Now we are preparing him for his big boy bed, he’s sleeping with the side of the cot down. So in the morning (and sometimes in the middle of the night) he will come running in with Bunny and Blanket and jump into bed with us!
We will be doing something in the house and all of a sudden Arthur will run off and I will hear “ahhhhh” I know he’s grabbed Bunny and Blanket. He will then come running back into the room with them, it’s very cute.
In fact he’s just done that now as I’m writing this, it’s 6am we are watching Toy Story 3.
For now, Arthur hasn’t really shown any interest in taking them out with us, and I’m happy to keep it that way for as long as possible. The idea of them being lost, or getting dirty when it’s too late to wash and dry them for that night is just not worth thinking about!!!!
I got a bit teary eyed looking back at these pictures, it’s not until you look back on those tiny baby pics that you realise just how much has changed!!
