Yep, I’m late with this again!!! I know, I know, I suck! I don’t even really have an excuse! These last 2-3 weeks have gone by in a total blur! If you missed last month’s update check it out
Anyway, better late then never (again) here is my update on Arthur and Freddie June 2017
Arthur at 4 years old
Aggghhhhh it’s here, it’s happened, he’s 4! I do cringe when I read the cliches from everyone (including myself) but they are all true, the ‘how did this happen’ ‘it’s gone so quick’ etc etc, it is seriously ALL TRUE!! I do feel like he was a baby just yesterday and now he’s a full blown 4 year old!
Okay, i’ll stop with the cliche’s for now (but be warned Freddie’s birthday is in August and you WILL hear them all over again!).
Arthur has really changed this month in so many ways. He’s looking so grown up now.
Now obviously, he still has tantrums about things and he still throws strops about things like having to eat dinner instead of sweets and all that stuff. But, he asks ‘why’ and is interested in your response. I guess it’s coming down to his speech and understanding improving further still. We can have proper conversations and I love it. I think back to when I started having concerns about his speech, when he was 2 (if you read that note me trying to cover up my concerns!!!), and he has come on such an incredible amount. We really couldn’t be prouder of him for that.
Arthur is waking up at ridiculous times at the moment. He has always been an early riser, but he’s been waking before 5 the last week or so. I’m hoping that it’s a hangover of all the birthday excitement and it passes soon!
He is enjoying school at the moment, and is barely taking a second to say goodbye to me at the door! I think he’s going to love the long school holidays though, it’s less than 3 weeks now until they start!
I couldn’t not include a little section about Arthur’s 4th birthday party in this update! It is the first year where he has really got the idea of a birthday party. With being at school, he’s got friends that he wanted to invite. Actually, he invited the whole class. I love that he wanted to invite everyone, even those that he doesn’t particularly have a good relationship with. I hope he is always so inclusive of everyone!!
In the end we had around 10 kids come and that was a really nice number. We were really lucky with the weather, it wasn’t too hot and really overcast making it perfect for all the kids playing outside!
He also invited our neighbours who he’s known since he was only a few weeks old, our best friends (but totally his best friends too!)!
We borrowed a little bouncy castle off a friend and we had the waterslide which mum and dad bought out for the boys. They went down a storm! We had planned to do some games with the kids but they were having so much fun we just kinda left them too it!
Anyway, he told me he wanted a ‘road cake’ (i don’t know either) and then he decided on a farm cake. I tried to be all pinterest-y but as usual, it didn’t really turn out that way! I was excited to find cadbury’s fingers to put round the edge, but they had all melted and stuck together so they didn’t really look so pretty by the time i got them on the cake #islandproblems! Anyway, it still tasted good and Arthur was delighted with it!
I decided right from the offset I wasn’t going to pretend to try and do any healthy food, it was going to be good old fashioned ‘proper’ party food. Triangle sandwiches (cheese and ham, so thats kinda healthy I guess!?), cupcakes, cookies, crisps, marshmallows with extra glittery sugar on, the lot!!
He had an amazing party and I was so proud of how all the kids behaved! I was a little nervous of how Arthur would cope with everyone playing with his toys but he was great! Everyone seemed to have a great time, and I’m sure its something he will remember forever!! It’s definitely a day we will remember, our little guys first proper birthday party!!
Freddie at 22 months old
This boy! He is something else let me tell you!!! So stubborn (goodness knows where that comes from…..!), SO independent, and so bloody clever! To say he keeps me on my toes is an understatement!!!
He is being an insanely fussy eater right now and it drives me nuts! The mornings are especially bad, he only wants cookies, sometimes I can pacify him with toast, if not, it’s giant tantrums all morning until he has a snack around 9-10ish. It’s safe to say he’s not a morning person, but when he sleeps until at least 7 every day I can’t really complain too much – now i just need him to have a word with Arthur about 5am wake ups!!
I’ve had a mild attempt at potty training this month, he’s showing lots of the ready signs but I’ll say to him do you need a wee ‘NO’ and then he will look down and wee. I’ll sit him on the potty he will get up and then ‘wee’ and tell me ‘wee wee’!!! I think this may be more of a battle than we had with Arthur!! I’ll try again in the holidays when we are not having to go in and out for the school run, and I’ll have Mark to help!!
Freddie is talking SO much and is so outgoing. He loves saying ‘bye, see you’ whenever we leave anywhere! He loves talking about Arthur and Daddy as well as pretty much anything else around him.
My favourite thing about Freddie at the moment is how cuddly he is. It’s nice for Mark and I that he wants to cuddle us, especially when he is having his milk! It’s a nice reminder that he does still need and love us!!!
Still the best of friends, Arthur and Freddie really love doing everything together. They are both huge Daddy fans right now too. It’s super cute to see how excited they are when he gets home from work. Freddie spends a lot of his day telling me Daddy is at work and Arthur always wants Daddy to play toys with him. I’d say I felt a bit neglected, but I still get plenty of love too!!
Ive started to see glimpses of the trouble these two are going to get into together, there’s some serious mischief planning going on already!
Arthur and Freddie April 2017
Its been a month, well yes it has been over a month. But I thought I’d check back in with an update on the boys. Last month’s update is here if you want a read
Its been a crazy month, Mark has been super busy in school, both of the boys were poorly for a couple of weeks. We are definitely all very happy the Easter holidays have just started here nd can catch up on some much needed down time.
Arthur, aged 3 years and 9 months
Being poorly came at a bad time as his class had just started practicing for their school show. By the time he got back into school he just wasn’t up for it at all. His class were going to be doing magic tricks and Arthur loved his little trick of making a ball disappear. He just was not cool with the idea of getting up on the stage, or being part of a larger production. He even stopped wanting to go into school at all.
The day of the show came and Arthur had said he wanted to do it, I took him down for it and he got really scared and upset and didn’t even want to watch the show. I felt so sad for him that evening. It was a really tough parenting experience trying to figure out the boundaries of how far you should be encouraging and pushing them out of their comfort zone.
The next day in school he was happy as could be and they started preparing for his sports day.
I couldn’t believe that he was going to join in but he had an absolutely fantastic time – he did all the races and he really enjoyed it. He was super proud of his medal at the end too.
Arthur has also started to swim out of his depth! We are so proud of the confidence he’s showing in the water! He loves swimming, and its amazing that he’s now taken the step to go into the deep too!! Of course, this does mean we are on extra alert watching him now but its a huge achievement!!
He has developed some serious sass in this last month, we are getting plenty of ‘I don’t like you’ and ‘This is Rubbish’. All in all though he’s still bloody cute most of the time – and still never forgets a please and a thank you!
Freddie aged 21 months
Freddie was poorly at the same time as Arthur. I was starting to worry because he really wasn’t eating much at all. Luckily, he has bounced back and is eating pretty well again. He does have a serious sweet tooth though.
It didn’t take him long for the little bit of shyness to break down with my Mum and Dad. He is just as besotted with them as Arthur is. They couldn’t believe how strong a character he is. Most of our Skype calls are taken up with Arthur, so it was really nice for them to get a chance to have some time with Freddie while Arthur was at school. He certainly holds his own when they are together too!
Freddie has lots of words now, most of which are related to the Ocean! Fish, Whale, Shark, tocto (Octopus), Boat are all favourites. He also has started to say Bye to things, mostly “bye fish” and “bye tree”
He loves ‘shooing’ birds, pointing out geckos, bugs, birds, cats, dogs and anything else he can find! He’d spend all day every day outside if he could. A true island boy!
Freddie is pretty sassy too. He knows when he’s doing something he shouldn’t and gives a huge grin after! I think we are in for some trouble with him as he gets older!
When the boys were sick I thought I would have a total nightmare with both of them at home. I was really lucky that despite being poorly, they continued to be great together.
Then when my parents arrived I was certain that Arthur would be really possessive of them and not give Freddie a look in. He yet again pleasantly surprised me.
Freddie thinks Arthur is the best and wants to be doing everything his big brother is doing. Arthur is still more than happy with having Freddie join in on his games too which makes me so happy!!
I took this picture after Arthur’s sports day. There is lots about it that isn’t ‘picture perfect’. Arthur is still in his sports kit, Freddie doesn’t have shorts on, and of course neither are looking at the camera. But, I still love it!!!
We have one more week of Easter holidays together. After that, its back to school for Arthur and work for Mark. I’m enjoying every second of us being all together before the madness of school starts up again!
I’ll be back next month with another update!
Arthur and Freddie March 2017
It has been far too long since I’ve written a post about Arthur and Freddie.
I have no idea why I stopped doing their monthly updates because I absolutely loved it. At the start of the year I promised myself that I would start writing them again. Its now March and I haven’t done so.
However, I’m changing that today! So here is a little post about Arthur and Freddie, as they are, right now!!
Arthur, aged 3years and 8months
This boy, is unbelievable right now. I can not explain how proud I am of Arthur at the moment. The thing that makes me most proud of Arthur right now has to be his manners. He ALWAYS remembers his please and thank you’s and I love that.
He is always so happy to help whenever he can, and even when he can’t he’s right there wanting to! He’s definitely is ready to start getting involved with some projects at home
We are working on building up his attention span because it can be pretty short. We are getting some great support from school with this.
Arthur’s speech has come on immeasurably since he started school, every day he surprises me with something new. I’m not exaggerating when I say that there has been real progress on a weekly basis. His teacher and all our friends and family have noticed it and it is a big relief. Its been something I have chosen not to speak about on here but it has been a big worry for us all. There is still progress to be made but we are all delighted with the progress he has made so far!!
Arthur is building some lovely friendships at the moment and its so nice to see. There are a couple of kids in his class who he is particularly fond of and he is so happy to see them every morning. He is also so lucky to have the friendships of all mine and Mark’s friends too, they love him and look out for him so much. Our ‘expat family’ is something I am eternally grateful for being so far away from our own!
A huge thing for Arthur in this last month is that he has all of a sudden turned into a full on fish! He has ALWAYS loved the water but now, not only is he going underwater, he is actually starting to swim too! All by himself, he decided he was ready!
Freddie aged 19 months
Where to start with Freddie!!! He is honestly hilarious. I can’t believe how much he genuinely cracks me up on a daily basis.
At 19 months he is pretty sure he can do everything his brother can and theres not a lot thats going to stop him! He is fearless, and oh so determined. Freddie’s so happy every day when we get Arthur from school, although dragging him away when we drop him off in the morning is becoming a challenge – he loves going into class with ‘the big kids’.
This month Freddie was sick for almost a week. He had a horrible fever, that seemed to spike in the afternoon. Also, he was eating very little the whole time. I think I worried about this more than normal as when he had his 18month injection he hadn’t really gained any weight. Now, rational me knows that they go through phases of this. But, panic-y worrying about being judged by everyone me went into a bit of a meltdown over this! He is eating again now, although he is becoming really picky which is SO annoying!!
We can’t get over how stroppy he can be. I know time puts rose tinted glasses on things but I am sure he throws bigger, and much longer tantrums then Arthur did at this age. Another sign of just how strong willed Freddie is.
My favourite thing about Freddie right now is how, when he’s tired, he comes and lies down over his legs or plops himself onto the bed or any soft object around. Then he wants me to tickle his back. Its so cute, he goes all super cuddly and lovely!
Freddie is starting to pick up quite a few words. ‘No’ is a definite favourite. He says Mummy a lot and also, ‘fish’ ‘shark’ and ‘whale’ in true island boy fashion!
Together, Arthur and Freddie are becoming a real team. They still love to be in each others company and mostly wants the other to be involved with whatever they are doing. I’m starting to notice that if one is upset and having a cuddle with me, the other is all of a sudden upset and wants the same too. Freddie is really copying things Arthur is doing, and saying too.
Arthur really looks out for Freddie. The other day we had an interesting incident where Arthur pushed Freddie but it was because he was getting him away from the oven (not on) that he was trying to touch. We were really happy that Arthur was protecting Freddie but had to at the same time tell him that he shouldn’t have pushed him!
Arthur is 3 years old.
Here comes the clichés (you’ve been warned):
The time has totally flown. These past 12 months in particular has just felt like such a blur!
It truly doesn’t feel like any time ago that our tiny little baby Arthur arrived, and now he is not even a toddler any more!
He’s a full blown pre-schooler!
This last year has seen so many changes for Arthur and to see how he’s taken it all in his stride has been unbelievable. He became a big brother, he potty trained, we moved house, he started going to school! All huge events in a tiny persons life.
Now at 3 years old, Arthur is becoming more and more of a chatterbox, he comes home from school singing a different song pretty much every day too.
Arthur loves his brother and just wants to make him laugh and be around him all the time! More than anyone it’s Freddie he asks about the most when he’s at school! I hope that Arthur always has this much time for his baby brother! Its amazing to think that we were ever worried about having another baby, Freddie makes Arthur so so happy!
It’s not just Freddie though, Arthur really is a lover! He is really affectionate with people he likes! I’m getting stories from school of him giving hugs to all the girls in his class, such a smoothie!!
He is definitely cheeky though and knows how to get what he wants! Its scary how often he outsmarts us all!!
When he wants to do something that he knows he’s not allowed to he will say “bye bye mummy” to try to get me to go away!! He also rather cleverly will wait till I am changing Freddie’s nappy or something that means he doesn’t have my full attention to go and do something he knows he’s not meant to!!
We spent the weekend of Arthur’s birthday on La Digue where we had a leaving dinner for one of our best friends (more on that soon) and then Sunday was Arthur’s birthday.
He was delighted to spend it with all our friends, who as far as he is concerned, are his friends not ours!
We came home early afternoon so that we could do Skype with the grandparents!! Unfortunately, Arthur fell asleep on the way back to the house, we left him for a nap but he was pretty grumpy when he woke up and wasn’t really into opening presents or performing for the camera!!
I can’t wait for this Summer in the UK, he is going to absolutely love everything about it, but particularly getting to spend time with our parents. He will undoubtedly be spoiled rotten but he deserves it…..They have a year of spoiling to catch up on with him, he will be sure to take full advantage of that!!
Our beautiful, happy, silly, adventurous boy. I wish I could express just how much happiness this amazing little person brings into our lives every single day. I wish I was good at mushy emotive writing, but I’ll never be able to do justice to show just how amazing he is.
Arthur is now 34 months old.
This month has gone by like a flash.
The first half we had Mark home with us as it was school Easter holidays, Arthur always loves it when Daddy is off work!!
Daddy is big favourite to Arthur right now, he must say Daddy at least 100 times a day!
During the Easter holidays We had our amazing trip to Silhouette island where Arthur had an absolute blast. He still talks about going to “our little house” now which I love!
Arthur had an unplanned couple of hours at school this month as I had to take Freddie to hospital (he’s totally fine but more on that here!)
Mark took him into the class and apparently he was as good as gold and had a great time. When I went to go and pick him up he was happy to see me but wasn’t ready to go home!! I took that as a good sign for when he starts in June!
The following couple of days Arthur napped on the sofa at lunchtime!! I was SO excited at the prospect of nap time returning but it seems it was just a random couple of days!!
I’ve been a little worried about Arthur’s eating recently. He is pretty reluctant to eat a full meal most days and just wants to get on with playing (Mark’s mum tells me he was exactly the same!!) he seems happiest with smaller meals and snacks throughout the day. Obviously I want to make sure he has enough to eat but at the same time I don’t want him to just snack all the time…. It’s pretty frustrating!
We had a couple weeks of at nighttime accidents. Changing sheets every day grew thin quickly, but things seem to be back on track now. Not really sure what caused it. Apparently it’s really common up to 6 years old to not be dry at night so I need to remember just how good Arthur has been doing so far!!
Arthur has always been very shy with strangers and often will hide or pretend they aren’t there!! We have noticed a little shift in Arthurs shyness this month, he has started to open up to people a little more, showing him the toy he’s playing with or something along those lines. It’s not all the time and not with everyone but I have been really amazed and proud of him for it. It may not be a big deal to everyone, but knowing just how painfully shy he can be it is a big deal for him!!
This month we’ve started to see Arthur testing and pushing boundaries quite a bit, doing things he knows he shouldn’t be and trying out new things! There has been lots of “NO MUMMY” “NO DADDY” and running away if we tell him to stop doing something, or just outright ignoring us!
It’s been tough, but he’s quick to turn it all around with a big “cuggle” a kiss or even just a cheesy grin!
Mark and I are definitely noticing that Arthur is becoming a lot braver with his little adventures whether that’s just in the garden, at the beach or anywhere really…he climbs a bit higher, wanders a bit further away, just generally gaining confidence with everything he does, it’s great but scary for us too!
He’s been a proper little parrot this month, I think he’s taking in lots of new words (so we’ve really had to watch what we say!!). His speech continues to develop all the time and some of the things he comes out with really amazes me, and often makes us all laugh too!
I have had days where I have found it really tough to keep him entertained all day, for me it’s final confirmation that he really is ready to be in school!! It’s really not long until he will be there now, so on those days that are tough I’ve been trying to remind myself to make the most of it all!
Arthur is 33 months old. The double three this month is a big reminder that we are on the serious countdown to Him turning 3 years old!
I have loved this month with Arthur, he has been an absolute pleasure to be around. I really can’t say enough good things about him. He seems to have developed loads of new interests, becomes funnier every day but is still our sweet natured gorgeous little boy.
His speech is developing at a rapid rate which is amazing and in turn, helping to reduce tantrums a little!
He loves playing in Freddie’s cot, takes all his soft toys in there and ‘puts them to bed’ tucking them all in with his blanket. He’s also started to ‘change’ them by wiping their bums (or that general area depending on the toy!) it’s super cute!! The best bit is that he always wants Freddie in there with him!
Arthur plays more and more with his toys, current favourites aside from the soft toys, are his cars. I love watching him get lost in his own little world playing!
He shows less interest in TV all the time, and will very rarely now watch for more than 30mins before getting bored, whereas he used to happily sit through a film! The exception being that he’s just developed a fascination with “racing cars”, much to Mark’s delight as it means we can now have the F1 on without there being a tantrum that it’s not Peppa Pig!! He loves to tell us the different colour cars and that “they are fixing the cars” every time a car is in the pits! They are apparently constantly crashing too, even when they are not!! When there is an actual crash he thinks it’s the best! The cutest thing about this though is that he has to get his cars out at the same time and they race too!
Another interest that’s emerging this month is cooking! I bake bread at least twice a week and usually cookies at least once a week and Arthur loves to help me. I pull up a stool to the kitchen counter and he sits along side me. He loves when I explain everything that goes into what I’m making and repeats it all back like he’s storing it to memory! I LOVE that he’s showing an interest in cooking and it’s something I definitely plan to encourage as much as possible!
With Arthur getting closer and closer to going to school I needed to start focusing on getting him to wear clothes, something this little island boy is not a fan of! My first goal is to just get him to keep some pants on! This little island boy likes to be au natural so it’s definitely a challenge, I think this might be a whole blog post in itself soon!
We are now in Easter holidays and so Mark is home with us for 2.5 weeks, Arthur absolutely adores having his Daddy home and I know there will be lots of fun for us all in this time.
I am very aware that after the Easter holidays there is only half a school term left before Arthur starts going to school, at least for a couple mornings a week. I intend to cherish every second I have with our gorgeous messy haired little guy until then!!
Arthur is 32 months old.
This month has been a busy one. We have not only moved house, but we also had a week without Mark when he went to London to interview new teachers.
I was a little worried about how Arthur would deal with the house move this time around. We spoke about it loads in the month leading up to it and we were lucky enough to have the key for that month so we could visit lots (and spread the move over time which helped loads!). That meant Arthur had lots of time to get used to and explore our new house. He’s been so happy here right from the start. He loves his new room and slept great right fro, the start.
Every morning he’s been waking up and saying “nice new house”. It makes me so happy!!
We have also had a little sleep revalation since we’ve moved. Arthur now sleeps, or at least is happy to stay in his room until about 7am every day!! For anyone that knows us, or regularly reads my blog you will know what a dream that is! Arthur has always been an early riser (like 5am early) and so for me to be able to get up have a shower and a cup of tea before he’s up has changed our whole day let alone morning!!
His later wake ups mean I’ve been getting a chance to get myself sorted and prepared for my little whirlwind when he gets up!!
I’ve also been giving him breakfast as soon as he wakes up, that’s cut out early morning TV time and asking for cookies every morning!!
I can’t express enough how much of a difference this has made to our whole day. Everyone starts the day less grumpy and it really does set the tone for the whole day.
Not sure if it’s connected but Arthur is showing less and less interest in the TV, he does like it on but he rarely sits through anything any more.
Arthur does have time on the iPad every day. It’s the same time every day and it’s always taken away after the same amount of time. It’s not connected to the Internet and only has the apps allowed by us. He is always really good when it’s time to take it off him. There are some that will be quite judgemental of us allowing him to play on it but now he’s not napping it’s the only truly quiet time I get during the day. It gives me a bit of time to reset and get some stuff done and so for us it’s all good.
He is showing much more interest in his toys each day. He plays so nicely and it’s really lovely to watch as well as jumping in and getting involved with him.
One of Arthur’s favourite games to play with me is ‘picnic’. The best thing about this is that we use nothing to play it except our imaginations! We sit down and munch away on whatever Arthur fancies ‘eating’ at the time, it quite often involves sweeties and chocolate cake but just as often some juice and apples (just like his real life requests!)
He also loves to sit down and read stories both with us and alone. I love listening him to while he “reads” any of his stories it’s so cute!
I am being increasingly aware of the fact that Arthur will be starting school soon. He will be going in for the last half term of the school year, I think just for mornings and maybe only a couple days a week depending how he gets on! He will be starting properly in September. I’m trying to soak in all the moments I can with him right now. Don’t get me wrong there are times when I’m totally ready for him to, like mid tantrum; but in general I know I’ll miss him lots when he starts!!
